Key Stage 3
- Key Stage 3 students are timetabled to have four fifty minute periods of Religious Education in a fortnight.
- Teaching staff aim to create a classroom environment where students feel secure to discuss issues and know they are valued.
- Students have the opportunity to reflect on and discuss the impact Bible teaching may have on their own lives.
- The department employ well planned lessons from schemes of work based on the revised NI Key Stage 3 Curriculum. The content of these covers the four learning objectives - the Revelation of God, The Christian Church, Morality and World Religions.
- Resources include the Christianity in Close-Up series of textbooks and student worksheets as well as the Religion for Living Workbooks and teacher prepared materials.
- Lessons take account of the Thinking Skills and Personal Capabilities such as Communication, Managing Information, Being Creative, Thinking, Problem-solving, Decision-making etc.
Topics in each of the year groups include:
- The Bible
- Life at the time of Jesus
- Miracles & Parables of Jesus
- Jesus' Relationship with Others
- Holy Week
- The Early Church
- The Celtic Church
- The department seeks to develop a spirit of tolerance, mutual respect and concern for others. Students are encouraged to show respect and understanding of those whose culture, beliefs or lifestyle may be different from their own.
- Opportunities are provided for classes to develop an awareness of moral standards and enables students to make informed decisions.
- The department aims to help students develop their full potential, academically, personally and socially.
- The majority of Year 11 and 12 students undertake CCEA Short Course GCSE Religious Studies. The option studied is 'Christian Ethics.'
- A number of students choose to 'top-up' to Full Course by studying a further module, 'Mark's Gospel,' after school one day a week.
- Other students are entered for the CCEA Entry Level qualification. Options studied are 'Jesus and the Foundation of Christianity' and 'Christian Practice and Morality.' This course of study includes four coursework elements, an internal and external exam.
- CCEA AS and A2 Level Religious Studies courses are offered by the department.
- The options studied are 'Luke's Gospel' and 'The Early Church.'
- Some department members help with Ignite, a junior club that runs during lunchtime. There are guest speakers, Bible studies, games and videos. A weekend residential is generally organised in the last term.
- After school revision classes are offered to prepare candidates for external exams. These are usually over a six - eight week period and each session focusses on a particular topic. A timetable of classes is displayed in the front foyer of the department.
- Year 12 students have the opportunity to attend the annual Life Conference which helps them to make informed decisions about sexual relationships and provides revelant and up-to-date information about the topic of Abortion.
- Year 10 classes visit and take part in a guided tour of the Islamic Centre in Belfast.
- The department are privileged to welcome a number of guest speakers and representatives from charities throughout the year. We express our thanks to organisations such as the Gideons, Stand by Me, Creation Outreach Ministries and the NI Hospice.
Homework & Core Assessments
- Challenging and meaningful homework is set on a regular basis, usually once in the fortnight.
- End of topic tests assess student's progression across topics.
- Core assessments take place four times throughout the year. These are usually creative or investigative pieces of work.
- At Key Stage 3, students are recommended to spend a minimum of 30 minutes on RE homework; at Key Stage 4, 45 minutes is recommended; and at A Level students should devote at least three hours per week to the subject.
- Revision lists are provided preceding exams and students are encouraged to try out different methods of revision.
